Talk the talk or walk the plank when G&S WA presents the famously zany musical comedy, The Pirates of Penzance, a swashbuckling tale of boastful pirates, bumbling ‘bobbies’, deaf nannies, and damsels in varying states of distress.
From the team that brought you the sold-out seasons of The Mikado and The Yeomen of the Guard, this superbly traditional version of The Pirates of Penzance by G&S veterans, Alan Needham (director) and Michael Brett (musical director) with a cast and orchestra of 50+ onstage will shiver your timbers!
The stars of The Mikado, Theodore Murphy-Jelley (The Pirate King), Chad Henderson (Frederic) and Belinda Cox (Ruth) return, along with Magda Lisek (Mabel), Ronald Macqueen (Major General) and Stephen Hastings (Sergeant), to take you on a comic adventure of swagger, deception, revenge, incompetence and love gone terribly, terribly wrong.
Famed since its inception in 1887, The Pirates of Penzance tells the hilariously implausible tale of Frederic who was mistakenly apprenticed to a bunch of pirates by his nanny, Ruth. Now, at the age of 21, he is eager to end his pirate days, only to be told by an infatuated Ruth that as he was born in a leap year it’s not over yet. Not for another 63 years!
From here, Gilbert’s wacky plot goes right off the deep end, when still-a pirate Frederic falls in love with the daughter of the Major-General, much to the consternation of his pirate mates, his inappropriate nanny, and the local constabulary, Gilbert’s ‘Keystone cops.’ Pandemonium erupts as this riotous romp ratchets up the mayhem to deliver its high-energy climax of comic madness.
